We may be tempted to move quickly from Palm Sunday, when an exuberant crowd welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem, to Easter Sunday, when He rose triumphantly from the grave. Holy Week services are an opportunity to slow that process down. Remembering that the Jewish day begins at sundown, the events of Maundy Thursday unite together with the death of Jesus Friday afternoon.

This year, our liturgy for Maundy Thursday commemorates a) the institution of the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper, b) the new commandment to love symbolized by the washing of feet, and c) the betrayal and beginning of Christ’s passion and death. We will leave in silence as we prepare to begin the Prayer Vigil.
