CANADIAN FOODGRAINS BANK is a partnership of 15 Canadian churches and church-based agencies working together to end world hunger by:

  • providing emergency food in times of crisis;
  • helping people improve their access to food in the longer-term, and;
  • engaging Canadians and governments toward meaningful change.

Most hunger responses are either short-term emergency projects or longer-term development projects. ‘Today’s recovery, tomorrow’s security’ combines both, representing an innovative approach built on the past work of the Foodgrains Bank and its members.

Visit their website for stories, videos, resources, and more information.

The road to Easter Sunday, through the solemn 40 days of Lent is a time for us to reflect, to lament the injustice of today’s world where so many go hungry; and receive God’s forgiveness, mercy and love.

Lenten Prayer: Let me Hunger Enough

“One does not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes
from the mouth of God.”

Matthew 4:4

Lord, let me hunger enough that I not forget the world’s hunger.
Lord, let me hunger enough that I may have bread to share.
Lord, let me hunger enough that I may long for the Bread of Heaven.
Lord, let me hunger enough that I may be filled.
But, O Lord,
let me not hunger so much
that I seek after that which is not bread,
nor try to live by bread alone. Amen.

God of Righteous Bounty
We are moved by your grace to work for justice.
We know that you hear the prayer of the
parent whose child is crying for food.
We know that you hear the prayer
of the farmer who is trying to make
ends meet to feed their family.
Be a balm to them, God, and give them
strength as they work to better their lives.
We pray for all those who grow food,
All those who gather, hunt, fish and harvest.
Help them as they struggle to adapt
to the changing climate,
As they wait for rain, not knowing
when or if it will come,
Journey with those forced to flee their farms and
homelands in search of safety or a better life.
We pray for the leaders and decision makers who
can support work for peace and reconciliation
And redirect millions of dollars of help and
opportunity with the stroke of a pen.
Attune their ears to hear the cries
of hungry people, the cries that are
so close to your very heart.
Give them the courage, the vision,
and the wisdom to make possible
a world where all are fed.
We believe that you are moving in our time
to end hunger, and we are grateful that you
include us as a part of this great liberation.
We pray in the name of Jesus Christ,
who still feeds the multitude.
Amen.
