Church Street Refugee Sponsorship Group

The Church Street Refugee Sponsorship Group is working with St Peter’s Comox and the Anglican Diocese of British Columbia to sponsor three refugees from Africa to come to the valley. St Peter’s is the Enabling Parish. St Peter’s receives funds on behalf of the Sponsorship Group and provides receipts for charitable donations over $25. Donations are managed and used in accordance to the CRA guidelines for the private sponsorship of refugees. The Anglican Diocese is the Sponsorship Agreement Holder Organization

The Church Street Refugee Sponsorship Group is made up of Comox Valley residents. The Refugee Project consists of three separate sponsorships. Two are women currently living as refugees in Ethiopia. One is in her 20s and has a degree in Public Health, the other is in her 40s. The third refugee, currently living in Uganda is in his 30s and has a degree in Computer Engineering. All three are relatives of a family happily settled in the valley who also came to Canada as refugees in the last six years.

The goal is to raise $75,000 ($25,000 for each sponsorship) as it is the responsibility of the Sponsorship Group to support each refugee when they arrive for one year or until they become self-sufficient, whichever comes first. Currently, the focus is on raising half of these funds so the applications to the government for private sponsorship can be submitted.

Unfortunately, we cannot receive one cheque for both ST. PETER'S and ST. PETER'S REFUGEE FUND as they are two different accounts and must be addressed separately. You can still use your same numbered envelopes, but to help us separate in our initial counting place an “R” in front of your envelope number that is going to the Refugee Fund.

How can you help?
